Silent films rely on strong and legible facial expressions to keep the audience engaged with the stories they tell: without dialogue, it was the eyes of the actors that tell the story. Kat Carson, specialist in historical acting techniques, leads you through a number of exercises to develop and express emotions through facial expression, with special reference to the acting of Emil Jannings in Der lezte Mann The workshop aims to help the audience to better appreciate the film (which will screen at 20:00 in Stadsgehoorzaal) by exploring Jannings’ craft in the context of the changing acting styles of the 1920s.
