About the event

W. Murnau’s tragi-comic Der lezte Mann (1924) is justly famous as one of the greatest films of the silent era. It combines revolutionary techniques (the famous ‘unchained camera’) with spectacular sets and a superb performance by actor Emil Jannings. A new musical score has been put together especially for this performance. Virtuoso pianist Olga Pashchenko interprets the film from the keyboard. With one eye on the screen, she paints the gestures and facial expressions of the actors through the music of Liszt and Mendelssohn, Casella and Schulhoff. Combining a visual masterpiece of cinema with the music by great composers, Der lezte Mann offers the audience an evening full of emotions and sensual beauty. The screening is preceded by an introduction to the film by Peter Verstraten (at 19:30, in English).
